Chapter Ten

After Elena’s fall Maya had worried endlessly about her, and spent a lot more time reading about Ataxic CP. Since the day Elena had talked about her condition with her, their relationship had palpably evolved. Less and less she got the abrasive Elena, the overly sexual side of Elena, the Elena who would do anything to keep the focus away from her own challenges. Maya cherished the new level of honesty between them, a vulnerability that was somehow fostering the trait in herself too. They talked about everything, her fears deep down that Livvie was having a better life with Robert, her fear that her court case would fall flat.

Elena was constant, steady in a way Maya hadn’t known in so long, between group homes and an unplanned pregnancy and then jumping from job to job and never quite landing on her feet. She was long nights spent at the mansion or her apartment, tan fingers around Maya’s throat and her name on her lips as their bodies twisted in the sheets like her fingers in Elena’s ebony hair. She was quiet Sunday mornings and jerking hands that spilled three cups of coffee. She was ingraining herself into Maya’s life, conquering the walls that usually held her safe, and bringing with her a new era that Maya knew she was falling in love with.

She clicked away at her keyboard, glad that five o’clock had already gone and she was almost at the end of the workday. Elena stormed toward her, arriving back from the meeting that had claimed most of her day, murder in her eyes.

“Miss Scott, could you join me in my office?”

The words were a rumbling hiss, and Maya’s stomach sank. Dating the boss or not, she still struggled to feel secure in her job, to stop holding her breath and waiting for the rug to be ripped out from under her feet again.

Margaret gave her a confused look, and she shrugged in response, glad that only the supervisor and Kathryn were left in the office to bear witness to this curt exchange.

The day after Elena’s fall, she was hailed as a hero for rushing to her aid and offering to drive her home, no one any the wiser to the truth of their relationship. It irked Maya that they treated Elena like a pariah, but unable to word things in any other way, she took the excuse they provided for her absence and let the subject drop reluctantly.

“Miss Scott.”

Shit, Elena was mad, and thankfully steadier on her feet of late. Maya pushed up from her desk and followed obediently, wondering if the little spike of adrenaline in her blood, slightly pleasurable against the backdrop of her worry, meant she enjoyed the powerful side of Elena a little too much.

Sensing the weight of what was coming, she stepped into the office and closed the door behind her.

“Do you think I’m some kind of invalid?”

That, she was not expecting.

“What the hell, Elena, of course not.”

“Then what? Are you
